After Amputation, the Heart Still Needs Our Attention

After amputation, look beyond the limb. Swedish cohort of people with type 2 diabetes: adjusted hazard ratios were 2.46 (95% CI 2.31–2.61) for all-cause mortality, 2.43 (2.18–2.71) for cardiovascular mortality, and 2.13 (1.92–2.36) for heart failure, versus matched controls without amputation. Association is not proof of causation; hazard ratios are not absolute risks.

An amputation should trigger more than a wound-care plan. New Swedish data sharpen the case for coordinated cardiovascular care—and a longer view of recovery.
