This terrific work from Gibson et al, including our SALSAmigos Jim Wrobel, Vicki Driver, Matt Garoufalis and Jim Christina, suggests a between 65% and 80% reduction in high level amputation when people received podiatric medical care. These trends also exist for hospitalization and all amputations.
This study evaluated some 47000 people with diabetes either commercially or federally insured with at least 2 years’ follow-up.
This is particularly compelling, as the patients receiving podiatric medical care were older and sicker.
