Lawrence B. Harkless, Founding Dean of Western University’s College of Podiatric Medicine, chaired an all-star session celebrating the 30th anniversary of the American Diabetes Association’s Foot Care Council. Harkless, the founding chair of ADA’s council, presided over lectures by Professor Andrew Boulton of the University of Manchester, Professor Dane Wukich, Char of UT Southwestern’s Department of Orthopaedics, Professor Benjamin Lipsky, of Oxford University and Professor David Armstrong of the University of Arizona. The session was organized by Dr. Katherine Raspovic of UT Southwestern, who serves as the ADA’s Foot Care Chair.
Boulton began the session with a look back at the past 30 years- decade by decade. Dane Wukich surveyed surgical advances for Charcot arthropathy. Oxford’s Ben Lipsky evaluated care of infections from pre-germ theory to novel new therapeutics. Armstrong concluded the session with a forward-facing talk “Stepping into the Future: The Diabetic Foot in the Next 30 Years”.
