THE HAGUE, Netherlands, May 11, 2023 – Professor David G. Armstrong, Director of the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA) at the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California, received the prestigious 2023 Karel Bakker Award for Limb Preservation today, to a standing ovation at the King Willem-Alexander Auditorium during the 9th International Symposium on the Diabetic Foot.

The Karel Bakker Award recognizes and honors scientists and clinicians who have made exceptional contributions to diabetic foot and limb preservation on a global scale. This year’s award was presented during the plenary sessions of the symposium, held at the World Forum in The Hague, Netherlands.

Presiding over the ceremony, Professor Nicholaas Schaper of Maastricht, lauded Armstrong as a trailblazing surgeon scientist and the leading authority in the field of limb preservation. “Professor Armstrong has not only produced more than 640 peer-reviewed publications but also cultivated a global network of mentees dedicated to this critical medical mission,” said Schaper.

Armstrong, visibly moved, responded with an impromptu acceptance speech. “This award should be dedicated to our personal and our professional progeny. Here’s to paying it forward and helping our patients move through the world a little better every day,” he said, drawing thunderous applause from the audience.

The Karel Bakker Award is a testament to Armstrong’s extraordinary contributions to the field of limb preservation. His pioneering research and passion for teaching have helped to shape the future of diabetic foot and limb preservation, improving the lives of countless patients worldwide.
