Sometimes the fossil record speaks through a skull, a tooth, or a tool. This time, it speaks through a heel.
Luis Prada at VICE had a wonderfully fun take on a new Journal of Human Evolution paper suggesting that Neanderthal heels were, quite literally, built differently from ours. The headline version is irresistible: Neanderthals had tougher feet. The original science, from Sorrentino and colleagues, is even more interesting.
A calcaneus built for a different world
The investigators used geometric morphometrics to compare the external shape of 7 Neanderthal calcanei with 64 Homo sapiens calcanei, spanning early Upper Pleistocene hunter-gatherers through postindustrial populations.
Compared with modern human heel bones, the Neanderthal calcaneus was generally shorter front-to-back, wider, and taller. Those proportions are consistent with a rearfoot designed for greater load-bearing and high mobility. The subtalar and calcaneocuboid geometry also suggested a more habitually pronated posture and a different strategy for stabilizing the foot and transmitting force through the proximal tarsal joints.
In other words: this was not simply a bigger version of our heel. It was a somewhat different mechanical solution.
The most interesting comparison may be with ourselves
One of the paper’s most provocative observations is that highly mobile, unshod modern humans show some of the same features—although less dramatically—whereas sedentary postindustrial populations tend toward a more gracile calcaneus. The authors suggest that footwear and reduced activity may be among the influences shaping that pattern.
That distinction matters. This is not proof that shoes have “weakened” the modern human foot, and it is certainly not an invitation to throw away the sneakers and walk barefoot down Ventura Boulevard. Genetics, body size, environment, nutrition, habitual activity and culture all leave fingerprints on the skeleton. The fossil sample is also necessarily small.
But the study makes a broader point that I think is enormously relevant to those of us who spend our lives thinking about feet:
Anatomy is partly biography.
The foot remembers what we ask of it
We often talk about the foot as though it were a fixed piece of hardware—a collection of bones, joints and tendons with a single ideal configuration. But the foot is more like a living suspension system. It is simultaneously a platform, spring, shock absorber, lever, sensor and historical record of loading.
Change the terrain, activity, footwear, body mass and loading pattern for long enough, and biology adapts. Sometimes that adaptation is useful. Sometimes it becomes maladaptive. And sometimes the very thing that protects us in one environment creates vulnerability in another.
That idea feels especially familiar in modern limb preservation. We manipulate load every day with shoes, orthoses, casts, braces, offloading devices and activity prescriptions. We measure pressure, temperature, motion and tissue stress because the interface between the person and the ground is not trivial. It is where structure meets behavior.
From Neanderthal rock fields to the diabetic foot clinic
The clinical lesson is not that we should try to recreate a Neanderthal foot. It is that there may be no meaningful way to understand foot structure without understanding the environment in which that structure is operating.
- Biomechanics is ecological. A foot adapted to one loading environment may behave very differently in another.
- Footwear is an intervention. It does not merely cover the foot; it changes the mechanical conversation between the foot and the ground.
- “Normal” is contextual. Population averages are useful, but they can hide the enormous effects of activity, culture and environment.
- Offloading is really re-loading. Every device redistributes force rather than making force disappear.
That last point may be the bridge from paleoanthropology to limb preservation. A calcaneus from tens of thousands of years ago and a plantar pressure map from this morning are, in their own ways, telling the same story: terrain shapes us, and load leaves a signature.
And yes, the Lego still wins
VICE joked that modern feet may be optimized less for rocky hunting grounds and more for sidewalks—and for loudly objecting when they encounter a Lego. Fair enough.
But beneath the joke is a terrific little piece of science. Feet are not static objects handed to us fully formed by evolution. They are the product of evolution plus the lives we live in them.
Different worlds. Different loads. Different heels.
