How to Make Dakin’s Solution

Dakin’s solution, also known as diluted sodium hypochlorite (0.5%), is an antiseptic used to kill germs and prevent bacterial growth in wounds.

It was first developed during World War I by Henry Drysdale Dakin and Alexis Carrel. Their collaboration arose from the urgent need to reduce the very high rates of wound infection, morbidity, and mortality among soldiers. At the time, carbolic acid (popularized by Lister and later Halstead) was widely used, but it was harsh and caustic. In contrast, Carrel-Dakin solution, given as an intermittent irrigation, proved much more wound-friendly — and remains in use today.
