The manuscript “Charcot Neuroarthropathy in Persons with Diabetes: It’s Time for a Paradigm Shift in Our Thinking” by our long-time friends and colleagues Dane Wukich, Bob Frykberg, and Venu Kavarthapu, advocates for a reimagined approach in treating Charcot Neuro-Osteoarthropathy (CNO) in diabetic patients. It emphasizes surgical intervention over traditional non-surgical methods to prevent deformity and complications in people with unstable or non-shoeable deformities. The paper highlights that the incidence of CNO (27,602 cases per year) in the U.S. is higher than several cancers and fractures, with a prevalence of approximately 208,880. This comparison underscores CNO’s significant impact, suggesting a need for reevaluated treatment strategies in diabetic care.
