“Restoration of sensory feedback from the foot and reduction of phantom limb pain via closed-loop spinal cord stimulation,” published in Nature Biomedical Engineering, presents a study on restoring somatosensory feedback in individuals with lower-limb amputations. The research demonstrates that sensations from a missing foot can be evoked using lateral lumbosacral spinal cord stimulation with commercial electrodes. This approach, integrated with a wireless pressure-sensitive shoe insole, shows significant improvements in balance control and gait stability. Additionally, it resulted in a considerable reduction in phantom limb pain for the participants. This study paves the way for further clinical assessment of lower-limb neuroprostheses providing somatosensory feedback.
