Post-Olympic Paris and Pre-Olympic Los Angeles: A Tale of Two Cities, Two Fires, and Two Futures

Standing in post-Olympic, post-fire Paris with Tania, I am struck by the echoes of devastation and resilience shared between two cities separated by oceans, centuries, and cultures: Paris, ancient and storied, and pre-Olympic Los Angeles, modern and sprawling. It is even more apropos that we are attending a symposium on wound healing.

In Paris, the scars of the 2019 fire at Notre Dame remain visible. Yet, these scars are not symbols of defeat. Instead, they are reminders of the enduring spirit of a city that has weathered countless storms and emerged stronger. The cathedral is rising once again, its rebirth a reflection of centuries-old resilience woven into the fabric of the city.

In Los Angeles, fires of a different kind recently swept through, propelled by fierce winds that seemed to carry with them the weight of climate uncertainty and urban sprawl. Yet, amidst the destruction, we find moments of hope: communities rallying, rebuilding beginning, and lessons being learned about how we live in harmony with our environment.

The juxtaposition of these two cities—their fires and their recoveries—offers a lens into their shared humanity. Paris, ancient and measured, carries the weight of its millennia of history with a steady grace. Los Angeles, younger and restless, pulses with a drive toward reinvention and storytelling. Hollywood, the dream factory of the modern world, shapes narratives that reach across borders, reminding us of both the fragility and resilience of the human condition.

As we look toward the future, particularly as Paris prepares for its Olympic debut, we are reminded that both cities stand as icons of what humanity can endure and achieve. Whether in the shadow of Gothic spires or under the spell of Hollywood’s cinematic glow, the fires of yesterday remind us to rebuild with purpose.

Reflections:

As we left the plaza near Notre Dame today, its spires shrouded in scaffolding, we thought of the Palisades and Altadena communities back home in Los Angeles, and of the dreams Hollywood projects to the world. Two cities, so different, yet bound by a shared story of overcoming. Perhaps it’s a tale as old as time—or perhaps it’s a sign that even in the face of uncertainty, our humanity binds us all.
