While advancing technologies create different tools to use to prevent amputations in those with diabetes, the concepts of prevention are nearly constant. We know that 6 major steps are necessary to achieve limb salvage in the shortest possible time. These steps are:
1. Infection recognition and management
2. Vascular disease recognition and management
3. Offloading pressure
4. Debridement of wounds
5. Promotion of granulation tissue
6. Wound closure
There are technologies that fit in each of these categories which speed transition to the following category. The advent of new devices replace older technologies, but the 6 step concept model perpetuates.
