First Podiatric Surgeon to Lead Keynote Presentation on Diabetic Foot Ulcer Management

Pittsburgh, PA, October 26, 2024 – In an keynote address at the 11th Annual UPMC Wound Care Symposium, Dr. David G. Armstrong, professor of surgery and neurological surgery at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine and a globally recognized authority on limb preservation and diabetic foot care, marked a new milestone as the first podiatric surgeon to keynote this prestigious event. His groundbreaking lecture on “Diabetic Foot Ulcer Management: The Journey Ahead” captivated a diverse audience of clinicians, researchers, and healthcare professionals, setting the stage for future advancements in wound care.

The symposium, hosted by UPMC Wound Healing Services and held at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburgh, gathered leading experts to explore innovative approaches to treating acute and chronic wounds, with a special focus on serving vulnerable populations. Dr. Armstrong’s keynote highlighted emerging strategies and interdisciplinary care models aimed at improving outcomes for patients with diabetic foot ulcers and preventing amputations.

Prof. Chandan Sen, Chief Scientific Officer for UPMC Wound Care and director of the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, introduced Dr. Armstrong, sharing, “Dr. Armstrong—his hundreds of peer-reviewed publications don’t adequately describe the positive influence he has had on wound healing and limb preservation.”

Dr. Armstrong, who has published over 700 peer-reviewed papers and co-founded the Southwestern Academic Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), is renowned for his commitment to developing and implementing advanced technologies for limb salvage. As the director of USC’s Center to Stream Healthcare in Place (C2SHiP), his work integrates consumer electronics with medical devices, aiming to advance patient care in wound management and diabetic foot care. His presentation at UPMC underscored the value of multi-disciplinary collaboration, from AI applications in healthcare to innovative offloading devices for diabetic patients.

The symposium, which runs through October 26, covers a wide range of topics, from novel wound care therapies to social determinants of health.
