In the Know with Toe and Flow: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Limb Preservation #ActAgainstAmputation @ALPSlimb

Every 20 seconds, someone around the world faces the devastating reality of losing a limb due to complications from diabetes, peripheral artery disease, trauma, and other critical conditions. This global challenge not only affects individual lives but also imposes significant economic and societal burdens.

Why is limb preservation such a complex task? Often, healthcare providers work in isolated silos, leading to fragmented care that undermines patient outcomes. Recognizing this, multidisciplinary teams have emerged to combat limb loss more effectively, integrating expertise across various medical fields—from vascular surgery to podiatry, wound care, diabetes management, and beyond.

Our recent editorial, co-authored with esteemed colleagues Dr. Ahmed Kayssi and Dr. Samantha Minc, explores how integrated care approaches—affectionately known as “Toe and Flow”—significantly improve patient outcomes, reducing lower extremity amputation rates by up to 60%. These teams not only enhance clinical results but also elevate patient quality of life through education, training, and proactive management.

We invite you to read the full article published in Seminars in Vascular Surgery here, to learn more about advancing limb preservation efforts worldwide.

Together, we can move towards a future where limb loss is no longer a global epidemic but a preventable condition.
