A Call to Action — By Congressional District: From the Amputation Heat Map @American_Heart #Diabetes @ALPSlimb #CLTI #ActAgainstAmputation

Making limb preservation a national priority- one congressional district at a time

Does your congressman or congresswoman know where you are on the amputation heat map?

That’s not just a rhetorical question. It’s a matter of life and limb.

The American Heart Association’s PAD Collaborative has unveiled a powerful tool: an interactive map showing non-traumatic lower extremity amputation rates across every U.S. Congressional District. The results are both urgent and uneven — and they demand action.

🔍 What the Map Reveals

This isn’t just about medicine. It’s about geography. It’s about policy. And it’s about justice.

  • Districts in the South, Appalachia, and parts of the Midwest show amputation rates up to 5x higher than more resourced areas.
  • Black, Native American, and rural Americans bear the brunt.
  • Many of these amputations are preventable — had earlier vascular consultation or effective offloading been available.

🩺 Behind the Data: PAD, Diabetes, and Delayed Care

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) and diabetes are the leading causes of limb loss. And yet, millions of Americans with these conditions are never screened, never referred, never treated — until it’s too late.

In too many districts, major amputation is still a first-line “treatment.”

🗳️ Why This Must Be a Congressional Issue

Your congressional representative doesn’t just vote on defense budgets or infrastructure. They vote on:

  • Medicare and Medicaid coverage for limb-saving diagnostics
  • Funding for community-based screening programs
  • Oversight of hospital and provider incentives
  • Support for health equity initiatives

This map can be their roadmap. But only if they see it.

✅ What Policymakers Can Do

📌 Know your district’s amputation burden — and take ownership of it.

📌 Ensure early screening for PAD and diabetes in primary care.

📌 Require vascular consultation before any major amputation.

📌 Fund programs that keep people walking — and working — not wheeled and waiting.

🧭 This is a Local Issue. This is a National Responsibility.

Every district has a footprint. Some leave too many people behind.

Use this map. Share it. Show it to your representative. Ask them:

“Do you know where we are on the amputation heat map — and what are you doing about it?”

Together, we can continue to make limb preservation a national priority — one district at a time.
